Then later, my brother and I spent summer "vacations" there. I used to love sitting on the big porch swing and watching the rain fall while my grandfather drank coffee and talked to me. My grandmother, Betty, would take us out picking blackberries and taught us about the local plants along the way. My first friend was named Diane Hirock (sp?) and lived on the property above my grandfather's. My grandmother died in 1975 and everything changed after that. My grandfather remarried and eventually sold the homestead and then moved to NJ and then to FL where he passed away. I had heard that the house had burnt down....I wonder who owns the property now? When I was ...Thanks for posting these great photos. When I was ages five to seven, we lived in the large brick house at the beginning of the road into the Carpentertown ovens. My father worked as a bookkeeper at the coke-oven offices. There were houses closer to the ovens, and one two-story warehouse-type building. I played with children who lived there. I attended first and second grade at the Hecla Elementary School (now demolished) which overlooked one of the coal mines. I have been back a couple of times and there is now no trace of the brick house.Brett Rutherfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10455657343593376244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7048678732955919447.post-7253554097553694422016-01-04T18:04:14.509-05:002016-01-04T18:04:14.509-05:00Thanks Del. I know little about mining except that some of my family were miners. I had read the novel, "Ragtime" by E.L.Doctorow years ago [he includes the lover's triangle story with Evelyn Nesbit, the girl in the swing, involved with Stanford White, but I did not realize how close to home that story was. Thanks again.Delhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09857580920095854591noreply@blogger.com
