We were always playing on it , sled riding off of the tipple was a big deal! Many (wilpenites) children played there . The fire burned underground for as long as I can remember . We also had (cabins) in the coke ovens , n played n explored all over the mines n tipples . There was even a sulfer pond back towards the 1 exposed mine entrance, that had HUGE foot prints from what we were told were from a large dinosaur, the whole way across the sulfer ponds floor,or bottom of pond. They actually had toe marks n everything! Many of the old ppl their told us about them ! and from talkin to elders of wilpen, we also heard of a woman that was comin back from a gathering ,on a horse drawn buggy , with her husband n little baby. It was dark and they rolled their buggy over into another pond (1/4 mi away from the sulfer pond) n the mother n baby both drowned .After that diff ppl have said about seeing a white glowing figure of a woman in an old white gown walking on the old power lines carrying her baby , n singing lullaby's .We never wanted to be back there after dark ! Lol . Several ppl have claimed to have seen her at night ! But yeah I just wanted to share a couple memories of my life , living on the top of (the patch) n growing up around a real burning mine fire . They eventually came in with big machines n dug up the fire tryin to put it out . IT STILL BURNS , N IN SPOT U CAN STILL SEE N SMELL THAT AWEFUL SULFER SMOKE .
