Last summer one of the roads leading into downtown irwin collapsed into the mines. The road was closed for about a year and the township had to reopen the mine and fill it with boulders and a drainage and then repave it. Then they had to do it again about an 8th of a mile further down the same road.
I have some cool pictures of the sinkhole and of the two mines that were re opened that i thought you would like. When they excavated the mine i went down and looked through the dirt piles and found the head to a pickaxe and some small guage mine rail sections and a few awesome bottles (one of which appears to be from the 1860s-80s) and tons of awesome stuff like old glasses and the remnants of leather boots. It would be cool to take an afternoon to go walk around the area with someone that knows how to read the old mining maps. My email is Pnobodyknows@gmail.com. I'd be happy to share the photos for your website too.

-AndrewAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7048678732955919447.post-72373470248397696862024-01-04T13:02:46.882-05:002024-01-04T13:02:46.882-05:00Thank you for sharing this historic rare site. I spent lots of time down that road fishing and exploring. My parents still live there. I recently saw a picture some mine workers in front of a train and some tracks and it was from Helen. I was so perplexed by seeing this train. I have never run across any remnants of old tracks, or even a clearing of area that looks like it was a railroad before, nothing. I’ve explored all over Smock, Keisterville and Waltersburg areas and cannot physically find anything. So I went online to try and find a mad of the old railways and couldn’t find too much. I found a very broad map but was looking for something more specific that I can match up to the actual land that’s still there today. I find it so interesting that at one time a train came through there at one point and I’d love to see exactly where. Because like you even said above, there’s almost nothing left there. It’s so very strange. My email is Hig.chels@gmail.com if you have any info or advice to offer! Thank you! The man portals that are in the tunnels, that most believe are for people to jump into if a train passes, aren't really that. Out of curiosity as we explore abandoned tunnels all the time, we started walking the outside of the hills or mountains they were in to try to locate where these door ways would be. And we found quite a few, there's often times shafts, they look almost like coal mine shafts that lead down through the hill, all the way to the tunnel, we could see the archways from the other side, and then there's usually a tunnel connecting them all running alongside the train tunnel itself. We found it quite interesting, we've never been able to travel the whole length of the rail tunnel through these outside tunnels however, we were not brave enough, as there were some spots in all of them that books collapsed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7048678732955919447.post-49247753087625767712023-09-05T09:57:44.003-04:002023-09-05T09:57:44.003-04:00I live in oliphant furance and these still stand t...I live in oliphant furance and these still stand today along with others near by on down the road and the powder mill is near by also up in the wooded part of the mountains below white rocks.
