Boyle & Hazlett Coke Works, Bridgeport, Mount Pleasant
These are part of one of the first coke operations in Westmoreland County. Built in 1871 and amazingly still visible, though greatly deteriorated. Note the difference in the brickwork from later ovens.
growing up in bridgeport as a kid i wouls it on my grandparents porch and watch at work. but now2 i can't find them wanted to show my kida part of penna history
ReplyDeleteThey're still up in there. If you walk down that coal and coke trail you can see them on the hill on the other side of the creek. Or if you start at the sewage plant, I think that's what it is, by the ball fields at the bottom of Clay Ave, you can walk back the old trolley line and they will be below you.
DeleteWhat remains of Bridgeport? It seems to have disappeared.
ReplyDeleteThere's a good chunk left of Bridgeport. Most of the town is down by the reservoir.
